Towards a source-oriented approach to typological universals

چکیده

Typological universals are skewed distributional patterns whereby languages recurrently display certain grammatical as opposed to others. Explanations for these usually based on their synchronic properties, not actual diachronic processes that shape the pattern cross-linguistically. The paper discusses evidence about origins of some typological pertaining word order and aspect/tense conditioned alignment splits. This poses two general challenges synchronically explanations universals. First, relevant do obviously arise because principles postulated account grounds. Second, development is a combined result multiple processes. These facts point new, source-oriented approach universals, one focusing what source constructions developmental mechanisms play role in shaping individual patterns, rather than properties itself.

A Constructive Approach to “Universals”

But it is beyond the power of human capacity to frame and retain distinct ideas of all the particular things we meet with: every bird and beast men saw; every tree and plant that affected the senses, could not find a place in the most capacious understanding. During the Middle Ages, much of the debate about universals concerned the question whether or not they could be considered to " exist ". ...

Typological Universals and Intrinsic Universals on the L2 Acquisition of Consonant Clusters

This study is to examine if typological universals built upon primary languages are applicable to interlanguage data in SLA. Implicational universal is considered the classic example of a typological universal by Croft (2003). Thus, the Interlanguage Structural Conformity Hypothesis, which consists of two implicational universals proposed by Eckman (1991), were tested against data from an inter...

Universals constrain change; change results in typological generalizations

case features are assigned configurationally to the Th-roles in a predicate’s Semantic Form. They cannot be idiosyncratic lexical properties of specific Th-roles, and their assignment cannot be specific to particular predicates. This means that the abstract Case feature [+HR] always defines the highest syntactically visible Th-role of a predicate, its “subject”. Given the previously introduced ...

Gender-Oriented Education: A New Approach to Gender Equity

The twentieth century can be considered the century of gender approaches. The curriculum is no exception to this rule. The pu...

Correlating complexity: a typological approach

Proceeding from the assumption that all languages are equally complex, there exists a corollary, widely held but poorly documented, herein referred to as the negative correlation hypothesis. It states: if one component of language is simplified then another must be elaborated. Here, this assumption is reformulated in terms of a scientific hypothesis and subjected to statistical analysis. Thirty...
